A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome to the Thornlie Senior High School Community
Our Vision – Engage Inspire Achieve
Our aim is for Thornlie SHS students to fulfil their aspirations working in an environment that emphasises the importance of respectful relationships and the achievement of personal best.
We are delighted to welcome returning and new families to Thornlie SHS. We also celebrate a very rewarding 2024 for the Thornlie SHS school community.
Staff and students completing the last few days of a year working together to ‘engage, inspire and achieve’.
As we look back on fourth term we acknowledge it has been a very busy and productive time of year for students, parents and staff as we formally farewelled our graduating class and transitioned our enthusiastic incoming Year 7s for 2025 into their secondary education.
Farewell Class of 2024
Over the second week of term the school community took great pride in saying farewelling our Class of 2024. This cohesive and caring group of Year 12 students left us to enter the next important phase in their lives well prepared to make a difference in their chosen paths.
Thornlie SHS is very proud of the part we have played in the Class of 2024’s secondary schooling, and we wish them well as they head off to explore the opportunities in employment, TAFE and/or University. Congratulations to our scholarship winners and those who won early entry into University. Special Congratulations to School Captain Holly Styn who was awarded the prestigious Rotary Club of Southern Districts Rotary Young Citizen of the Year Award for 2024.
This year’s celebrations commenced with the Year 12 Silent Disco Dress Up Day in the PAC and a delicious Morning Tea provided by our dedicated Home Economics Team. Staff and students had spent considerable time planning and organising their costumes as they all looked fantastic.
Next came an early morning for Year 12s and staff to enjoy a buffet breakfast in Canning Vale before the all-important whole school Farewell Assembly. With such an enthusiastic group – it was a full house with family and friends joining us. We were all very proud to acknowledge the achievements of this talented and caring group of students and give them the opportunity to reflect on their 6-year journey at Thornlie SHS.
The Year 12s thanked the dedicated teaching staff that had guided them along the way, their parents and family for their love and support and each other for the good times and memories. We also acknowledged their hardworking Year Coordinator Mr Jarrad Symanns who led this year group over their entire Year 8 – 12 journey through our school.
After the moving final address to the school by School Captains Ruby and Holly, the Year 12s left with our best wishes through the traditional Guard of Honour made up of Year 10 & 11 students, staff and parents.
This year the formal Year 12 Graduation Ceremony was conducted at Rixon Theatre and we were delighted to have key note speaker Jan Cooper OMA and community special guests address the audience with their wisdom and key messages for the graduates. This was an outstanding evening and one I’m sure the 2024 Graduating Class, family and friends will remember forever as a very special day.
Congratulations to all the award winners on the night and to our invited guests and staff for their attendance. Special thanks to Mrs Stewart, Mrs Wallwork and the numerous staff for their time and effort in organising this important event, all of our invited guest speakers, our School Captains, presenters and to Mr Sean Doyle our Master of Ceremonies.
We know that our departing Year 12 students will look back on their time at our school with a smile and take with them many fond memories of Thornlie SHS. The legacy you left behind will be long remembered within our school.
The Year That Was 2024
Over an historic 2024, we have progressed our 2024-2027 Business Plan making significant gains in student outcome as to work together to create a culture of high expectations and achievement for every student and staff member. We thank families for their support and look forward to seeing ongoing improvement in students’ overall results and applaud their perseverance and participation in their schooling.
Under the guidance of our highly supportive School Board, chaired City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes and with the input of the P&C; the school staff, parents and students have worked tirelessly to ensure Thornlie SHS is a High Care – High Performance Independent Public School.
Our school motto of ‘Engage, Inspire Achieve’ underpins all we do as we have maintained a relentless focus on Teaching and Learning and embraced technology as a vital part of education in today’s world.
In particular we acknowledge President Michelle Manolas and the P&C Committee as they continue to go from strength to strength in the support provided to the students at Thornlie SHS. AS well as valuable support of curriculum initiatives we now have the full set of 4 PBS Mascots due to their effort. Students greatly value the additional resources provided to improve conditions for student learning.
In addition, the support of the Your Move Committee has overseen huge improvements in the services provided to encourage and support students who ride to school. Thornlie SHS is again a Double Platinum school and the top points scoring secondary school in WA. Grants from the Department of Transport have further improved the Bike Rack enclosure and the Queen’s Jubilee Grant has now been fully acquitted.
Over the last few weeks, the school community has taken great pleasure in celebrating the final achievements of our students this year – highlights have included a range of excursions, camps, presentation evenings and performances. In particular, we celebrated the successes of the Rugby Academy, the continually developing Volleyball Teams and the talented Art and D&T students at the annual exhibition and of Music and Dance students in their Term 4 Showcase.
This year’s Ohana Cheer and Dance quad of 40 travelled to Queensland to again be crowned National Champions and bring home 2 gold and 2 silver medal at the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) National Championships.
Our Jazz, Pom, Cheer and Hip Hop teams competed amazingly and placed in every division as follows;
National Champions: Elements (Hip Hop)
National Champions: Elite (Jazz)
Zodiac (Pom)
Black Ice (Cheer)
We were also awarded Scholastic Grand Champions for the following routines. These are the top scoring Cheer and Dance teams out of all schools for the competition. A huge achievement to place in the top three in this category!
Elements
Black Ice
Zodiac
Wel also congratulate the 2024 Student Council Representatives who have shown themselves to be outstanding role models as they proudly supported staff in welcoming Year 6 students for their formal Year 7 Orientation Days.
At our final school assembly for 2024 we celebrated a successful year and acknowledged our consistent and high achievers. Attendance and House Points awards were well earned by many students across the school. Congratulations!
We farewelled our much loved and respected deputy Principal Mr David DeMeo on his retirement from public education. Over his 40 years in public education and 19 at Thornlie SHS he has been a well-respected and valued leader. Congratulations Mr DeMeo.
We also wished Mrs Dhillon well on her appointment to Rockingham SHS, Ms Megan Mathieson on her move to Carine SHS and Ms Naomi Rigby on her move into the TAFE sector.
Their service to Thornlie SHS has been greatly appreciated and we will miss each of these wonderful staff members all the best for the future.
A Final Word
All students have now received their Semester 2 Reports via email or in the mail and are to be congratulated on their achievements this year. We thank families for their ongoing support of their child and the school this year. Details for the return to school have also been sent to all parents and carers to assist in their preparations for the upcoming school year.
The school office will reopen on Thursday 30 January 2025. Teachers return on Monday 3 February 2025 for two School Development Days.
We will then welcome the return of students on Wednesday February 5th February and the school community can look forward to a new exciting and challenging year as we prepare for another productive school year.
We trust all students, staff and families have enjoyed a safe and relaxing festive season – and we welcome you to 2025 school year.

Hats Off to You!
On their way through the front gates our students stopped to write lots of lovely messages to our staff as a surprise, just in time to celebrate World Teacher’s Day!
The staff at Thornlie Senior High School were also beautifully recognised by our parents for the important role they play in our community and were thanked for their passion and dedication.
In addition, we celebrated the staff who played an integral role in organising Wednesday’s fabulous Year 12 Graduation and congratulated Mr Symmans who completed an incredible 5 years of being Year Coordinator for the Class of 2024.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Mental Health Week
Mental Health Week is aimed at creating an awareness of mental health and wellbeing on a national level. It is celebrated around the world in October to encourage social connection, provide resources and promote preventative strategies to keep our communities mentally healthy.
We are very lucky to have been invited by Curtin University to participate in their Mental Health Week celebrations on Thursday 17 October. A group of students including our international students spent a day on campus. They listened to a talk by the world-renowned global humanitarian, spiritual leader, and peace envoy Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on mental health and strategies to cope with the stresses of their everyday life as a student. They participated in a breath-based meditation activity as a technique to help them maintain calmness in the face of adversities.
After lunch, the students were treated to an extremely engaging Makey-Makey challenge for an hour and a half. The students were instructed on how to build keyboards on which they could play notes. They learnt how to program these notes on a laptop while reinforcing Physics concepts they have learnt at school.
The students had a fun, entertaining, educative day out at Curtin University are certainly looking forward to visiting again to complete their class on building more cool stuff on campus.

SCIENCE NEWS
This is a proud moment for the Science Department, as our students have achieved success in two major competitions. Their hard work, dedication, and passion for science have truly paid off and we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments.
International Chemistry Quiz Competition
On the 21st and 22nd of August 2024, lower school Science students from Years 8 to 10, and Chemistry students from Years 11 and 12, participated in the 2024 International Chemistry Quiz (ICQ) Competition. This competition is open to students across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Region. The quiz aims to promote and encourage awareness of the nature and relevance of chemistry among secondary students. It provides an opportunity for students to assess their own achievements in an external examination setting, with schools receiving a computerised summary of results and information regarding students performance.
Congratulations to the following students for winning distinction awards this year:
- Year 12 Chemistry: Connor Napier
- Year 11 Chemistry: David Rozells
- Year 9 Science: Dylan Bell

CAREER PRACTIONER
As we approach the end of the 2024 school year, the amount of varied Careers activities for students across the whole school has ramped up again. These events have been located within and outside of school.
Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 & 12 Chamber of Commerce & Industry WA
Vanessa Ratana presented to a specific group of students interested in starting an apprenticeship program after school. This session was very informative as it demonstrated how students could achieve their dreams of becoming a mechanic, carpenter, electrician for example. Vanessa highlighted the career pathways students can take to move into many occupations that are now in high demand. She especially highlighted the need for students to access sponsorships via the Construction Training Fund and how many areas were recruiting organised and responsible students with good grades in both Maths and English.
Year 11 & 12 Careers Fair
Held in the Performing Arts Centre at school, over 150 students across both Years 11 and 12 spoke with a variety of external employers and organisations to get a better understanding of opportunities available out in the local and national workplace. 17 organisations attended including Bunnings, The University of WA, Jandakot College of Electrical Training and the Australian Defence Force to name a few. Students participated in a quick fire “speed dating” format with each organisation so they could get a broad understanding of many workplaces/ study areas in the time allowed. The feedback at the end was awesome with both students and presenters declaring the event a great success. Many thanks to The Smith Family for sponsoring this event.
Year 9 & 10 Try-a-Trade
Motivation Foundation (Civil Construction)
13 lucky students attended a three-day experience driving excavators, skid steers and rollers at the fabulous facilities at the purpose-built Motivation Foundation in West Swan. Under qualified instruction, students got to know what working in the Civil Construction industry front line was like. Along with essential safety procedures and checking the machinery students experienced the intricacies of using machinery to prepare for underground pipes and foundations for roads and buildings. The photos below speak for themselves! A great time was had by all and some students have now applied to join the two-year Certificate Program this Foundation provides for students in both Years 11 and 12 – good luck with the applications boys!
Yalagan RTO (Civil Rail and Draughting)
Two groups of Year 9 students attended two separate excursions at the Yalagan offices in Welshpool to see what both Civil Rail and Draughting were like. The Civil Rail experience was very practical and involved use of two way radio communications and using the Rail simulators on-site. This provided very stimulating for some students and they have actively expressed an interest in the rail industry as a result. Draughting saw students experience how buildings are first drawn then develop into the building phase. This involved precise drawing of plans using various techniques with some nice student designs being made as a result of hard work throughout the two days. Both of these areas are available for senior school students to study during Y11/12 as extra Certificate courses as part of the VETDSS Program offered at the end of Term 3 each year. See Mr. Lamont if any student is interested in finding out more.
Year 9 Career Taster Program
A massive part of my role as career Practitioner is to provide experiences for Year 9 students to see if they like an occupation or wish to find out more about a career before they commit to it in the future. Career Tasters in the following areas are a stepping stone to stimulate future student interests and ideas:
- Plumbing (MPA Skills)
- Heavy Diesel Mechanics (Centurion Logistics)
- Barbering/ Hairdressing
- General Mechanics (Southside Mitsubishi & Maddington Toyota)
- Visits to the Construction Training Fund facility in Bentley
Year 8 Curtin Ahead Careers Day
Y8 students experienced a great day out at the Curtin University campus in Bentley. They completed many future careers based activities and an “Amazing Race” around the campus! To top it off students experienced the great food on offer in the main canteen with Tacos being the favourite choice!
Year 7 ABCN Innovate
22 Year 7 students are visiting the Bankwest Tower in Perth city to experience what it is like to work and have some fun in a great work-space. Activities covered both STEM and AI and how they affect the workplace. Students work with Bankwest mentors and ABCN staff on fun activities to develop teamwork and awareness of upcoming technologies and issues. The mini “puff” car challenge saw some great car designs that battled it out to see which was the most efficient build using minimalist equipment. Well done to the students involved as they demonstrated impeccable behaviour and attitudes during the public bus journeys both to the venue and back.

THORNLIE SHS ARTS WEEK
September 16th to 20th 2024
This year was the first year at Thornlie to have a weeklong celebration for Arts Week. Students got to meet visiting industry artist, explore different types of arts and get involved in the weeklong activities across the school.
On Monday the 16th the Year 10 visual art students worked with visiting arts Tessa Dorotich to put a new spin on some old masters. Students used found materials along with, collaged papers and spray paint to come up with new artworks. Students also got involved at recess contributing to a chalk mural in the canteen quad.
Tuesday we had an amazing visiting artist, Kirilee Cosplay come and speak to Thornlie students all about cosplay. How to get started, how to design your own costumes and the best conventions to meet people that love to be creative. Students also got to start designing their next cosplay ideas. Students also had the opportunity to get face painting done at recess and an amazing live performance by our concert band at lunch.
On Wednesday we had an amazing Manga artist Debora showed our students the fundamentals of how to draw the basic Manga face followed by Mr Turner teaching cartooning by using basic shapes. Students were captivated in both workshops. Students loved making and receiving balloon animals, and in the evening our amazing dance students performed their final show at Lumen Christi.
Thursday was another full day of art activities including a visit from Modern Artist teaching students how to use Procreate on iPads in graphic design. Followed by a painting workshop with aboriginal artist Ash Collard. Students created amazing landscape painting with bright sunset backgrounds.
Friday saw the final day of Arts Week with an amazing guest speaker Justin Randall who spoke to the Year 9 visual arts and graphics students about his graphic novels, how he illustrates them, creates photo shoots for his compositions and how he constructs with VR a 3d world to help draw his story.
Arts Week was a whole school event, a big thank you to the MESH departments for adding some creative activities into this week, like flower dying in science and a famous faces mural in HASS. And to all the staff and students participating in the homeroom quizzes.
A special thank you to the P&C for funding some of these amazing activities and my Arts team for your help and support during the week.

MUSIC NOTES

Goodbye to our Year 12 Musicians!
Goodbye to our Year 12 Musicians
Congratulations to our Year 12 musicians who recently graduated. I wish you all the best for the future and wish to thank you so much for your commitment to the Instrumental Music Program over the last six years. Thank you to Kira N, Lydia T, Danikah C and Mica B.
Instrumental Lessons
Our IMSS teachers have been working hard with the students to complete semester 2 assessments. It is important that the musicians attend their lesson every week so that they have every opportunity to complete tasks before reporting is completed later in the term. All lessons will run until the end of week 9 this term. There are no scheduled IMSS lessons in week 10, so please be sure to take instruments home in week 10 for the extended holidays.
Upcoming Performances
Some of the Year 10 musicians will be performing music at the opening of the annual Arts and Technologies Exhibition in week 4. Thank you to all who have offered to perform, it is much appreciated.
In week 8, many of the Year 7-11 musicians will perform at 2 days of Year 6 Orientation concerts, which will be a shared showcase event with Dance. The Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, Year 7 Instrumental Music classes and some selected solos/duets will perform in the music half of the program. Please be sure to attend rehearsals each week in the lead up to the 2 performance days in week 8.
Year 7 2025
The Instrumental Music class for Year 7, 2025 is being finalised as I type! If you have a child in Year 6 that is attending TSHS in 2025 and they are currently learning an instrument through their primary school IMSS program and you have not completed a music application, please ring the school so that we can add your child to the program. We do not automatically know who is learning an instrument or if they wish to continue, so please contact the school if you would like your child to keep receiving their free instrumental lessons in 2025. We would love to have them join the program.
Beginner placements have been filled and there is very limited availability left to commence as a beginner. Please contact the school if you are interested in your child starting either guitar or saxophone lessons in 2025.

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Term 4 is set to be another busy term for the Health and Physical Education Department. We have seen some fantastic events taking place with plenty more to come.
Outdoor Education
We sent two groups of Year 11’s off to camp in Dwellingup, they explored the area on mountain bikes and made there way down the Munda- Biddi Trail taking in the sights as they rode.
WAIS Tour
In Term 3, TSHS was successful in their application to attend the WAIS Tour. Our enthusiastic House Captains along with Mr Firth attended the WAIS High Performance Service Centre for the day where they participated in a range of workshops; including the use of the Timing Gates and recovery rooms. This was a great opportunity for those students who continue to demonstrate an interest in the Health and well-being field.
Staff vs Student Netball Game
After high anticipation all year from the Year 12s in taking on the TSHS Staff in a game of Netball, the Year 12 cohort assembled in the Gym at lunchtime to spectate that annual event. Once again the staff were tremendous in their skills and on-court strategies, taking out the win once again. Scores were Staff- 9 goals, Students 7-Goals.
Despite the score, sportsmanship and pride was high and everyone had a great time.
Rugby
Rugby have seen multiple competitions already this term, taking on Rockingham and Atwell at away games. With some of our junior students stepping up and filling in for the older teams they have put on a great display of skills and continue to show improvement in their on- field play.

RUGBY RUNDOWN
We are slowly coming to the completion of the school year as well as the last of our games for the Rugby Academy students. We have entered all Year group teams in both Rugby Union and Rugby League Competitions throughout the year with some great results along the way.
Many of our Academy students have made exceptional progress throughout the year with our Year 7, 8 and 9 Academy numbers reaching near capacity for each class which is outstanding. Along the way, our Academy Teams have reached the finals in the 10 a-side Western Force Cup, been very competitive in the NRL WA Rugby League Schools Competition in which our current Year 8s have reached the semi-finals against Atwell, which will be played next week, we have enlisted more girls into our program which is a credit to Mrs Scia Scia hard work and dedication and formed a Rugby Union relationship with Coastal Lakes and Ridge View College.
Well-done to three of our Academy students, Dozion (Year 11), Leighay (Year 10) and Friday (Year 11) who were selected for the Under 16’s Western Force Team. The boys took on ACT, Melbourne Rebels, Queensland Reds and the NSW Waratahs showing some promising signs for the upcoming U18 Schoolboys in 2025 and Under 19 Western Force Academy for next year.
And a special shout out to Dozion who Captained the team in all the matches.

HEALTH CENTRE NEWS
Your Move
What a busy start to the term we have had with Your Move. October is Bike Month in WA and we successfully applied for a grant to run events at school during Bike Month.
Fruit kebabs were given out to riders twice during Bike Month, a healthy refreshing treat that was donated by the Manolas Family. The kebabs disappeared very quickly as the students collected their bike and rode home after school.
Westcylces, RAC and the Department of Transport gave us $350 to run Tour de Thornlie. Thornlie SHS’s version of Tour de France! Students registered to participate and then they marked the days that they rode to and from school. We calculated the distance from home to school and doubled it to allow for the ride home. All the data was entered in a spread sheet and on Thursday, the last day, the winners were announced at a healthy and delicious breakfast by Mrs Kennedy, Deputy Principal.
Dylan Falconbridge rode 98.8 kms over the last 2 and a half weeks and was the overall winner of the Tour de Thornlie, winning a $100 bike shop voucher. Dylan also won one of the yellow jersey’s, in week 2, winning a $50 gift voucher. Kaeden Wheeler and Taylah Wheeler won a $25 gift voucher each for winning the Yellow Jersey in week 1. There were five students who rode every day of the competition, and they went in a draw to win a $20 gift voucher with the winner being Jordan Frings. Finally, there were 7 canteen vouchers for just participating, and the winners of these were DJ Millet, Layla Pearce, Asha Hodges, Blake Hamilton, Tate Blackwell, Zac Venables and Arotea Mosen. Please congratulate the students for winning but more importantly, for participating and riding to and from school. They are looking after their own health and wellbeing but also decreasing carbon emissions and congestion around the school.
The Your Move team would like to thank Westcycles, the Department of Transport, the RAC, the Manolas family and Mrs Tracey Nelson for their sponsorship of the inaugural Tour de Thornlie. Sue would like to thank P & C leaders Michelle Manolas and Tracey Nelson for their invaluable assistance with preparing and serving the breakfast.
Act Belong Commit
The Tour de Thornlie and the Bike Month activities are excellent examples of TSHS providing opportunities for students to be active, connect with others and engage in meaningful activities.
Belonging at TSHS
School belonging is the “the extent to which students feel personally accepted, respected, included, and supported by others in the school social environment”

Belonging is an important aspect of any community, but schools in particular play a unique role in fostering child, adolescent, staff and community belonging.
A strong sense of school belonging contributes to positive school culture for students and staff. Student belonging allows students to feel accepted, respected and valued, leads to higher engagement and motivation in their learning and builds social and emotional skills.
There are a lot of clubs and sporting groups at TSHS that students and staff can get involved in. Please browse through the list of available clubs and sporting groups that you can join. Come and see Sue in the Health Centre if you want to start a club up.

Warmer Weather
With the warm weather well and truly here this summer it is timely to remind students to put sunscreen on before they head to school and again at lunchtime as well as bring their drink bottle to school every day. Sit in the shade during lunch and recess if the UV reading is high. Don’t forget to look at the UV monitor outside the gym to help you decide where to sit, sun or shade!
