A NOTE FROM THE PRINICPAL

Welcome to the Thornlie Senior High School Community
Term 1 of the 2025 school has been a busy one with the ongoing growth in student numbers, as many new students and their families join the Thornlie SHS ‘Ohana’ (family) from interstate and internationally.
Connecting with Community
As always, all students, staff and parents have been very proactive in demonstrating their willingness to ‘Engage, Inspire and Achieve” in everything we have on offer at Thornlie SHS.
This year we are proud to have conducted a very colourful week of diverse and inclusive Harmony Week activities that included our highly interactive Meet and Greet Parent/Teacher Afternoon and the Harmony Day Carnival on the school oval.
Enjoy reading about the wonderful range of excursions, incursions and class activities that students have engaged in over the last 10 weeks. Congratulations to all Thornlie High Achievers!
Academic Achievement
Our Year 12 students are now a third of their final year of high school and we look forward to supporting them in their efforts to achieve the best they can by the end of this year. Year 12 VET, General and Big Picture students have been actively engaged in their workplace learning placements over the last two weeks of this term. We sincerely thank local businesses who continue to support our school and provide our senior students with a head start in the world of work.
In addition to making a solid start to the academic school year, our focus for Year 10 – 12 has also been to ensure all students were well prepared to successfully achieve OLNA. Passing the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment is a requirement for all students at the end of Year 12 to meet the benchmarks set for the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
We are pleased to see that Year 7 – 9 students are settling into their learning programs and taking advantage of opportunities to extend their learning. Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN Testing ran very smoothly this year. We look forward to sharing the reports on student progress in the very near future.
Parent and Community Partnerships
Thornlie SHS values and seeks parent and community involvement in our school. We also encourage students to proactively voice their ideas on how we can improve their learning experiences.
The 2024 School Annual Report will be published in Term 2.
Parents are invited to register their interest to fill any vacant parent position on the 2025 School Board. All interested parents are encouraged to contact me at the school – I particularly encourage parents of Year 7 parents to consider being a part of this important decision making group.
We schedule one meeting per term in Semester 1 and two meetings in Semester 2. The meetings are conducted on a Monday at 5:00pm. The next meeting is scheduled for 5:00pm Monday 19 May 2025 in the Conference Room.
If you would like to nominate to join the Thornlie SHS School Board, please contact me at the school during office hours or by email thornlie.shs@education.wa.edu.au.
P&C Meeting – Great work continues
Our P&C Committee have again been highly proactive in providing support to the school community over 2025. Thornlie SHS staged a very profitable Democracy Sausage Sizzle at the recent WA state elections with proceeds going to support the 2025 Japanese Exchange Visit to Osaka in September. We look forward to similar success in May with the upcoming federal election providing the P&C and our Hospitality students the opportunity to serve our community on the day.
The P&C’s support is greatly appreciated by all students who benefit from their dedication and generosity.
Please consider joining us for the next P&C Meeting in Term 2 in the Staffroom or contact P&C President Mrs Michelle Manolas michelle.manolas11@gmail.com if you are keen to hear more about the work undertaken by our hardworking parents.
School Health and Wellbeing
As the warmer weather finally leaves us and we approach the beginning of our cooler months all staff and students are encouraged to update their vaccinations to guard against the impact of the COVID and Flu viruses next term.
COVID cleaning protocols and ventilation remain in place.
If your child is unwell for any reason over the upcoming winter months, please keep them at home until recovered and fit to return to school
Important Dates
Staff will return on Monday 28 April for a School Development Day.
The first day of Term 2 for students is Tuesday 29 April.
I wish all families a safe and happy April School Holiday Break and look forward to continuing work with you to ensure a safe and productive Term 2 for all staff and students.

BIG PICTURE ACADEMY
Building Community Spirit in the Big Picture Academy
In the Thornlie Senior High School Year 10-12 Big Picture Academy, we believe in the power of community and collaboration. This term, our efforts to foster a strong sense of community have been more visible than ever. Through a series of town hall meetings and designated community times, we have created spaces for students and staff to connect, share, and grow together.
Our students have been actively involved in sharing their knowledge on various aspects of the Big Picture Learning Design unique to the Academy. This peer-to-peer learning has not only enriched our educational environment but also strengthened the bonds between students across different year levels. A highlight of this term has been the warm welcome extended to our Year 10 Big Picture students. They have been invited to participate in exhibitions hosted by senior students, providing them with a firsthand experience of what their future exhibitions could look like. These initiatives have been helpful in easing their transition and inspiring them for the journey ahead.
As we approach the end of the term, we are eagerly looking forward to a fun-filled Big Picture Cricket Day. Organized by Noah, a Year 12 BP student, with the support of Mrs. Hill, this event promises to be a fantastic opportunity for students to unwind and enjoy some friendly competition. CAREER PRACTIONER NEWS
The beginning of 2025 has seen the continuation of Careers activities at school.
Year 9 Early Career Development
Year 9 students in their HASS groups have been accessing the excellent My Future Careers web site to investigate and find out more about their possible future career pathways. Each student has completed their online “My Career Profile” which enabled them to delve into occupations that suited their individual personality traits. From here, a representative from Thornlie TAFE enabled each student to have a taster of their personal occupations using Virtual Reality headsets and the Mind Flight Program. For example, students were able to have a go at various occupations ranging from being a chef to a bricklayer to a pilot. This will continue throughout the academic year with every Year 9 HASS class taking part in due course.
Year 9 Taster Program
Roy Hill Operations Centre – Perth Airport
A massive part of my role as Career Practitioner is to provide experiences for Year 9 students to see if they like an occupation or wish to find out more about a career before they commit to it in the future. I managed to take a group of Year 9 students to the new Roy Hill Remote Operations Centre at Perth Airport this term. Here, Students got an insight into how a WA mining company operated and how many of the services on-site are now operated from here in Perth. Students looked out across the operations centre from the viewing platform. They also took part in a variety of activities ranging from Virtual Reality headsets (mining activities) to remote controlling mining tractors to running there own future based mining company. Many thanks to Roy Hill Mining for providing this awesome experience.
Notre Dame Year 9 Future You
Fifty Year 9 students had the experience of working with the Notre dame Future You team at school, developing their personal awareness of personal interests, skills, values and preferences. Sessions took place over two hours. The activities ran in conjunction with the My Future Careers website and link in perfectly with the Year 9 Career Taster Program to be followed throughout the remainder of the year. Thornlie students worked closely with undergraduate degree students from Notre Dame University and they demonstrated and discussed how they pursue their dreams and careers post-school. The careers activities led perfectly into another Virtual Reality session where Thornlie students could experience various occupations in the virtual world without any of the associated risks and pitfalls.
Year 10 ABCN Focus
Ten Year 10 girls attended two days of fun activities promoting female leadership in the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s offices in Perth City. Here they worked closely with representatives from the bank to develop their personal awareness and profile to achieve higher outcomes in the future. The girls worked closely with carefully selected female mentors and it was awesome to see how they developed over the course.
Year 11 & 12 Notre Dame University Future You Excursion
Twenty students had the chance to experience the delights of Fremantle’s Notre Dame University Campus for a morning. Students were shown around the campus with various careers based activities thrown in. The students were shown how they can enter University via various pathways (ATAR and non ATAR) to make the experience valid for everyone.
Year 11 & 12 Careers Fair
Held in the Performing Arts Centre at school, over 150 students across both Years 11 and 12 engaged with a variety of external employers and organisations to get a better understanding of opportunities available out in the local and national workplace. Seventeen organisations attended including The WA Police, The University of WA, Jandakot College of Electrical Training and South Metro TAFE to name a few. Students participated in a quick fire “speed dating” format with each organisation so they could get a broad understanding of many workplaces/ study areas in the time allowed. The feedback at the end was awesome with both students and presenters declaring the event a great success. Many thanks to The Smith Family for sponsoring this event.

CAREERS CENTRE
As the term draws to a close congratulations to the Year 12 General students who are currently completing their first block of Workplace Learning for 2025.
Workplace Learning is a very rewarding component of the Vocational Education programs, enhancing the theoretical component with practical experience in industry. Each block of 55 hours of Workplace and a completed Skills Journal earns a student one C grade. Workplace hours are also valuable as they gain points for Tafe entry. Many of our students are offered traineeships, apprenticeships and full or part time work. This program develops the ability to make an informed career choice while acquiring recognised workplace skills and establishing links and networks in industry.
Year 12 Workplace Learning Block 1

SCIENCE NEWS
It’s been a busy and exciting start to the year in Science!
Presently, Year 10s are learning about Genetics and Inheritance of family traits. In a hands-on activity, students used their knowledge of dominant and recessive genetics to design a baby alien. First the students flipped counters to decide which trait each parent would be contributing to their offspring. They then had to consider which trait would be demonstrated by the baby alien, and then they constructed the alien using different materials.
Year 10 Zazzle Genetics

Year 12 Chemistry students refined their titration skills, an essential analytical technique used to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. This precise method is widely applied in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food processing, chemical manufacturing, and environmental science. Through careful technique and accurate measurements, students learned how to identify the endpoint of a reaction and ensure reliable results—an important skill for both laboratory work and future studies in science and engineering.
Year 11 Physics students delved into Newton’s Laws of Motion, focusing on the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. They conducted an experiment to investigate how the angle of an inclined plane affects the acceleration of an object. By systematically changing the incline and recording the object’s motion, students analysed real-world applications of Newtonian mechanics, reinforcing key concepts in motion and forces. This experiment provided valuable insight into how physics principles apply to engineering, transport, and everyday life.

MUSIC NOTES

Term 1 Wrap Up
The Music students have engaged in a fantastic introductory teaching and learning program this term, with a big focus on ear training and attending instrumental lessons and ensemble rehearsals. After just 8 rehearsals, our before and after school ensembles are beginning to sound like real musicians, with all students demonstrating significant improvement in their playing this term. The groups are beginning to work on repertoire that will be performed for certain events this year, such as school assemblies, festivals and our big event for the year, the annual music concert in Term 3.
The Concert Band have already performed at their open rehearsal at the Parent Meet and Greet afternoon held in week 7, and have also been hard at work preparing hymns, songs and National Anthems for the whole school ANZAC service assembly to be held in Week 10. They should be commended for their sensitive and reflective interpretation of these important pieces of music which are a key part of the school ANZAC service. Well done to all band members who have been participating in the after-school rehearsals to prepare the music for this important performance.
Snapshot of Class Work in Year 7, 8 and 9 Instrumental Music
Year 7 Instrumental Music
The Year 7 class have had a lot of fun this term developing their aural training and theory skills and have enjoyed playing the game Pass the Beat Around the Room. They are currently working on their body percussion skills, learning a piece called Rhythmic Rondo, which they will have a hand at composing and performing in small groups.
Year 8 Instrumental Music
The Year 8 class have been working on their group performance skills this term, learning how to work together to overcome any challenges that may arise when playing music in groups. I look forward to hearing their final group performances at the end of term. They are also learning to compose variations on a given melodic theme. It is hard work creating just enough variation to ensure that you can still hear the original melody!
Year 9 Instrumental Music
Whilst a small group; what they lack in numbers, they definitely make up for in personality! The year 9’s have been having fun learning to increase their secondary instrument skills on both the piano and ukulele this term, playing songs that use AABA form, which was a common song structure in the 1940’s to 1960’s. We have played some Elvis Presley songs, and the students are working hard to learn to play chords on the piano for their piano performance assessment.
Online Resources
There are many online resources that can be utilised for music learning and composing at home, provided you have a computer/laptop and an internet connection. One of the best free online websites for brushing up on music theory and listening skills is musictheory.net
This website provides in depth lessons and exercises that students can complete for practise at home. It includes note recognition, scales and key signatures, intervals and chords and has a fantastic ear training section for improving aural skills. The site is free and no sign up is required.
For those wanting to experiment with composing their own music, the school uses the free website Musescore on the computers in the music room. This is a free music notation software program that can be used on windows or macs. It is great for composing your own music or creating arrangements of melodies for various ensembles. Students are encouraged to get Musescore onto their home or personal computers so that they have access to the music tasks we complete in class using this software.

Year 8 Soccer Zone Carnival
On Monday 7/4/25 Thornlie SHS competed at the annual Year 8 Soccer Lightning Carnival at Maida Vale Reserve, Maida Vale. The team had a mixture of boys and girls competing together and showed a great team comradery. The carnival saw 7 teams compete, with Thornlie having to play all 6 other teams once (20 minute games). At the end of the all the games, we had won 4, drawn 1, and lost 1. We tied for second place but were demoted to third after count back due to scoring less goals than the other joint second placed team. We played off for third and fourth against Lesmurdie SHS and won 3-0 finishing the day in third place. The Final was won by Kent Street (the team we finished equal with – and beaten during the day!) 2-1 against Darling Range Sports College.
The students were brilliant and showed amazing perseverance and pride throughout the day in hot conditions.
Some of the standout performers of the day were:
Akansh Kumar – 6 goals for the day and a standout performer
Rehan Nurmohamed – dominant playmaker
Jacob Ferguson – absolute rock in the heart of the defence
Jayden Lewis – Goalkeeper, only conceded 4 goals all day
Oliver Fernandez – winger, ran all day and constant menace
Mobye Ngaking – defender, got stuck in all day
Angellea Gallardo – strong in the tackle, didn’t take a backwards step
Well done to all the other players for also trying their best all day!
Mr Jeremy Binder - Coach

Optus Stadium Tour
Our Year 12 Certificate II Sport and Recreation students recently had an unforgettable experience at Optus Stadium! We embarked on a journey behind the scenes of Perth's iconic sporting and entertainment venue.
The tour provided a fantastic insight into the inner workings of a world-class stadium. Students explored the locker rooms, imagining the roar of the crowd as they stepped onto the hallowed turf. They learned about the stadium's innovative design and technology and even got to experience the breathtaking views from the top tiers and the game day coaching boxes.
Highlights included:
- Walking through the players' tunnel, feeling the anticipation of game day.
- Learning about the stadium's sustainability efforts and its role in the community.
- Taking in the views of the oval as it was being prepped for the Western Derby.
- Testing out the ice-baths and spa’s that players use for recovery after games.
The Optus Stadium Tour gave the students an educational experience that broadened their understanding of sports, architecture, and event management.

Year 11 & 12 ATAR Health Wellness and Harmony Expo
On Wednesday 9/4/25 the Year 11 and 12 ATAR Health students visited the annual Cyril Jackson Wellness and Harmony Expo in Bassendean. The Expo is held each year and encompasses a mixture of Health agencies (over 35 this year) ranging from Cancer Council, Headspace, Holyoake, Sexual Health Quarters and Volleyball WA with the festivities of Harmony Day with a large Multicultural community attending their school.
The students were encouraged to visit and browse as many of the stalls as possible with vast amounts of interactive activities and plenty of free giveaways (always a highlight!). There was a free sausage sizzle, free prizes to be won and the chance to mingle and socialise with likeminded students/people.
The event allowed our students to get a greater understanding of the many different areas of Health and opportunities that this field has in the community and the job prospects that are available once they finish High School.
The students behaved impeccably and represented the school with the highest respect. We look forward to visiting once more next year.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST UPDATE
At the beginning of the term, we shared an article on helping your teenager to transition into a new school year. This month we want to focus on what are some key signals that your child could be having difficulty adjusting to transitions. It is often when we see a few of these signals presenting together that it can be indicative that your child may need support with the adjustment.
- Not feeling connected – if they are having trouble connecting with friends or aren’t able to list a teacher or school staff member they can go to for help
- Unable to list anything about school that they enjoy and are hesitating to come in the morning
- Not interested in any hobbies outside of school
- Having trouble being separated from you as their parent
What you can do to help
- Spend 10 mins of 1:1 time with your teenager doing something with them that they enjoy each day. These short amounts of undistracted time remind our young person we are available to them
- Encouraging your teenager to be a part of community groups and clubs in and outside of school
- Regular physical activity.
- Speak to the year coordinator if you are concerned about how your young person is travelling.
- Check out the wealth of resources on this topic through School TV https://thornlieshs.wa.schooltv.me/newsletter/school-transitions
Have a fantastic school holiday break

HEALTH CENTRE NEWS
Your Move
What a busy term the Your Move team has had, what with the Community Health Nurse speaking to all the new year 7 students in the first 3 days of school, our Ride2School day in March and then the Your Move and PBS raffle of a new bike and scooter to any student who demonstrated one or more of the school values.
Year 7 Transition Days
The Community Health Nurse spoke to each Year 7 class about Your Move and Act Belong Commit. Students were encouraged to look at the way they travel to school and to see if they could use a more active way to get to school. They then were told about being active, belonging and committing to look after their own mental health. Students then made a pledge to themselves about how they are going to look after their mental health.
Ride2School Day
We had over seventy students ride or scoot to school on Friday, 21 March, 55 bikes and 15 scooters. These students all got tickets in a raffle with a variety of bike accessories (that we got as Your Move rewards) as prizes, from helmets, to bike locks, bike gloves and water bottle holders. Our winners were Dexter, Jake, Dillon Lilly, Austin, Reubin, Zoe, Joab, Kaeden and Seth. We had 4 students, Jackson, Max, Jordan and Blake, decorate their bikes for Harmony day and they all got a pair of bike gloves or a water bottle holder for their efforts. Pancakes and watermelon were available for the cyclists and scooters for breakfast, thanks to the Centrepoint Church and the Your Move student team.
Bike Mechanic
The Your Move student team also organised a bike mechanic to visit the school bike compound who serviced over 20 bikes. The students were very pleased to get their brakes checked and their bikes serviced.
Immunisations
Our Year 10 students have been vaccinated last week by the school based immunisation team. The team will be back in November to vaccinate anyone who missed out. The team will be at school in Term 3 to vaccinate the Year 7 students for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis.

WHAT’S ON AT THORNLIE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

P & C News
The P&C members wish to sincerely thank the school community for supporting our fundraising events so far this year and supporting students across the school.
Many staff and families have been donating some of their 10c containers to our P&C at various Cash4Container depots since December, totalling $225.65! Your generous support has enabled us to provide food & other items to our school Breakfast Club, run by the wonderful Thornlie Student Service Team and staff volunteers five days a week.
At our State Election Democracy Sausage Sizzle the P&C members collaborated with Mrs Stewart, Mr Young and the student group travelling to Japan this year and $1800 was raised which will subsidise the Japanese cultural activities on their trip.
At our Federal Election Democracy Sausage Sizzle and Bake Sale on Sat 3rd May, the P&C members are collaborating with Mrs O'Callaghan-Munt and students studying Hospitality Cert II. The proceeds are going towards their excursion to Bentley Pines Training Restaurant at Bentley TAFE in Term 3.
If you're able to make a $20 P&C contribution through school fees this year, our members would be most grateful. We'd love to provide resources and activities for students: like Artist Workshops during Art Week, a new set of Interschool Sport Uniforms and more outdoor seating.
The next P&C General Meeting is scheduled for Monday 19th May at 6pm in the staffroom.
