A NOTE FROM THE PRINICPAL

Welcome to the Thornlie Senior High School Community
Our Vision – Engage Inspire Achieve
As second semester commences we look back on a wealth of learning activities and experiences that have supported our students to ‘engage, inspire and achieve’ in 2025.
The Term 2 calendar was filled with work-place learning, exams, incursions, excursions, interschool sports, Market Days and extra-curricular after school sports and activities.
Students actively engaged in the myriads of learning opportunities offered both in the classroom and in our community.
The social event of the year for our Year 12s – the School Ball was a highlight on Friday 20 June with gala celebrations at Burswood on Swan. Congratulations to the Ball Committee and Year Coordinator Ms Tahlia Brealey and Deputy Principal Linley Stewart on making this a night to remember for all present at the evening.
The last week of Term 2 was a colourful and highly engaging celebration of NAIDOC Week with staff and students fully emersed in this year’s theme of The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.

High Care – High Performance
The Year 10 Parent Information Evening was well attended and provided a wealth of information for the all-important decision-making process our Year 10s are undertaking as they prepare for Year 11/12 in 2025/2026.
Student have also completed a full day considering course offerings for their studies in Year 11/12.
Course Selection meetings with Year 10s and their parents will commence in Term 3 to assist students make well informed decisions about their senior secondary pathway. Careers Practitioner Mr James Lamont and course counsellors will assist students and their families through this important process as they select their future pathway via ATAR, VET/General or Big Picture Courses.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Over the last few weeks all staff have been busy compiling and collating reports for students. These have been emailed home at the end of term. For those parents/guardians who have not supplied an email address please contact the school as soon as possible to ensure you receive your child’s Semester 1 School Report. Those parents with no email address will receive their child’s report during the first week of Term 3.
Any parent/guardian of a Year 11 or Year 12 student who has concerns about their child’s progress is urged to contact the school on 6235 7900 to arrange an interview as soon as possible to discuss what processes can be put in place to ensure your child/children improves their results in Semester 2. For parents/guardians with students in other years a Parent Teachers Interview event is scheduled in Week 3 for Wednesday 6 August from 12.00pm to 6.00 pm. Teachers will be available via telephone or face to face to speak with you about your child’s progress. Further information on the booking process will be sent home early next term.
Thank you and Welcome to Semester 2
As a school community we also thank our parents/caregivers and families for their support as we move through the 2025 school year.
We acknowledge our hardworking P&C members for continuing to support students and staff. This year the P&C have actively campaigned for improved school facilities, conducted two democracy Sausage Sizzles in support of our Japanese Exchange Program and the Hospitality students, continued to support the Your Move Committee, acknowledged staff with a very welcome Morning Coffee Van Treat in Week 10 and funded Physical Education Interschool Shirts and an Artist in Residence.
We trust all Thornlie SHS families enjoyed a very relaxing and restorative July school holiday.
Teachers resumed for Term 3 on Monday 21 July with a School Development Day.
Students returned on Tuesday 22 July.
Stay well, stay safe.

PURPLE HANDS FOUNDATION
The Year 9's visited the Dockers training grounds on Wednesday and I was told to send you the pictures and a short paragraph or two about it. Please let me know if this is correct and if what I have done below is correct too.
On Wednesday 2 July, 21 Year 9's visited the Cockburn ARC which is the Freemantle Dockers Football Club HQ. The Year 9's during Term 2, participated in an 8 week program run by the Purple Hands Foundation which is part of the Fremantle Dockers. The program has three key objectives which are to: Increase the level of mental health literacy, decrease mental health stigma in participants, and to increase help-seeking intentions by the end.
At the Cockburn Arc, students were able to tour the facility and see where and how the Freemantle Dockers train and receive the supports they need. Students visited the players changing rooms, gym and training areas. Students also had a chance to visit the players chill out spaces and the supports that are offered to them.'

BRIGHT MINDS, BOLD IDEAS
This morning, we kicked off an exciting new project with students from South Thornlie Primary School and Yale Primary School - and what a fantastic start it was!
Over the course of this year, these talented young innovators will work in small teams to develop a creative product or solution as part of a Shark Tank-inspired challenge.
Along the way, they’ll dive into:
- STEM
- Critical thinking & problem solving
- Design & prototyping
- Entrepreneurship
- Teamwork & communication
The project will wrap up in Term 4 with a special event where students will pitch their ideas to an audience of peers, teachers and families.
We’re so excited to see what they create - it’s going to be an incredible journey of learning, collaboration and innovation!

SCOOTER SKILLS & SAFETY
A big thank you to Josh and Sam from WestCycle for running an awesome 2-hour e-Rideable Workshop with our Year 11 Cert II Sport & Recreation students.
The session focused on safe riding practices and gave students the chance to put their skills to the test on an e-scooter. A great mix of theory and hands-on learning!
Thanks also to the Road Safety Commission Western Australia for their ongoing support in promoting safety and awareness.

MUSIC NOTES

Music Excursion – Movie Magic
On Friday 13th June, 30 excited Instrumental Music Program students attended a special education concert performed by musicians from the West Australian Symphony Orchestra at the Riverside Theatre. The program featured pieces of film music composed by the legendary John Williams, as well as educational insights as to how Williams composes his most epic themes. Students were treated to performances of famous themes from films such as Superman, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and of course, Star Wars! It was a fantastic show, and our Percussionists were extra excited to watch our very own IMSS teacher, Robyn Gray, performing in the percussion section of the orchestra. We are incredibly lucky to have such an experienced staff member here at TSHS teaching the next generation of musicians!
Year 7, 2026
A reminder that you have a child currently learning an instrument in Year 6 or if you know of anyone who learns an instrument that are intending to enrol at TSHS, to please get your applications in to express interest in continuing the instrument when starting secondary school. We can continue all Year 6’s who apply that are currently learning an instrument through their primary school IMSS program and offer many instruments, including Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba, Percussion, Classical Guitar and Contemporary Guitar.
We also offer a limited number of beginner placements, to selected students who successfully complete the aptitude test and are willing to learn one of the instruments we need to fill to increase numbers and improve ensemble balance. In 2026, the beginner places will include Saxophone, Percussion, Low Brass (Trombone, Baritone) and Contemporary Guitar (subject to examining our incoming numbers of continuing students). If you have any questions regarding the Instrumental Music Program or need an application form, please see our school website for further information and an application.
Term 3 – Save the Dates!

CHEER & DANCE CAMP
From the moment our Thunder Ohana Competition teams arrived at Bickley Recreation Camp, it was clear we were in for a truly special weekend. Across three jam-packed days, from May 30 to June 1, our athletes came together not just as individuals or even teams—but as one united Thunder Ohana family.
While the rest of Perth was caught under gloomy skies and relentless rain, somehow we managed to dodge every single drop! It was as if the sun knew we had important memories to make, and it showed up for us the whole way through.
This camp wasn’t just a getaway—it was an opportunity to connect, grow, and ignite the Ohana spirit that underpins everything we do. With the busyness of competition season fast approaching in Term 3, the camp offered a vital space for our students to focus, bond, and get inspired.
Throughout the weekend, the energy was electric as the teams tackled a variety of thrilling and creative challenges. From zooming over the lake on the flying fox, to working together to build intricate catapults, every activity tested not just physical skills, but communication, trust, and teamwork. These weren’t just games—they were powerful reminders of what we can achieve when we work together.
The team-building exercises were a standout, with students stepping out of their comfort zones and leaning into the support of their teammates. It was beautiful to watch friendships strengthen, leadership emerge, and laughter echo across the campgrounds.
Evenings were filled with just as much excitement! Our epic Quiz Night brought out the competitive spirit and brains alike, with the Pink Team taking out the win in an incredibly close contest. Then came the highly anticipated Ohana’s Got Talent—a chance for each team to showcase their creativity, coordination, and flair for performance. The Green Team stole the show with a dazzling act that wowed everyone and secured them first place. And when all was said and done, it was the Pink Team who emerged as the overall camp champions, proving that consistency, energy, and teamwork really do pay off.
A massive round of applause to our Spirit Award winners, who were recognised for their positivity, encouragement, and embodiment of what it means to be part of the Thunder Ohana:
- Ella – Pink Team
- Aizlyn – Green Team
- Billie – Purple Team
- Maddy – Blue Team
A special thank you must go to our incredible Year 12 leaders, who went above and beyond all weekend. Their leadership, organisation, and genuine care for their groups helped everything run smoothly, and they brought so much energy, maturity, and heart to the experience. Whether they were leading chants, encouraging younger teammates, or helping coordinate the day’s events, they were absolutely outstanding. We’re so grateful for everything they contributed.
And of course, a huge thank you to Mr Salmon, who generously gave up his weekend to support us. His help, humour, and dedication were deeply appreciated, and we’re so lucky to have had him as part of our camp.
Watching all four teams support one another throughout the weekend—cheering on each other’s performances, helping each other through activities, and celebrating each other's successes—was a powerful reminder of what makes Thunder Ohana so special. It’s not just about competing. It’s about community. About lifting each other up. About being part of something bigger than yourself.
As we head into Term 3—our busiest season filled with competitions, performances, and our much-anticipated Showcase—we do so with renewed energy, stronger bonds, and hearts full of Ohana spirit.
Here’s to an amazing season ahead. Let’s do this, Ohana!

HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION
As Term 2 draws to a close, we want to congratulations all students from Years 7 to 12 who have proudly represented our school in a variety of sporting events throughout the past few weeks. It has been an action-packed term with opportunities for students to showcase their skills, leadership, sportsmanship, and commitment both on and off the field.
Our SSWA Netball teams demonstrated exceptional teamwork and dedication in the Champions Cup, competing fiercely and representing the school with pride, taking away some wins on the day and witnessing some exceptional Netball from the like of other schools in the Perth-Metro area. Our SSWA Boys Basketball Coached by Mr Jordan team showed impressive grit and talent in their fixtures, but didn’t get the result they were hoping for in the finals.
SSWA Netball Competition

The school also had strong representation at the SSWA Volleyball competitions. Students took on the challenge with great enthusiasm and displayed solid technique and teamwork, with several close matches providing a true test of skill and perseverance. With all teams placing 3rd on the day. C Division- Girls team fought hard all day and finished in first place bringing home the Champion School’s Plaque
In a fantastic demonstration of leadership and community involvement, a number of our senior students volunteered as officials for the Southern River Sports Association’s Primary School Winter Carnival. Their enthusiasm, support, and encouragement of younger students was highlighted by staff and we continue to support our local school’s in many of there events as a great ongoing partnership between schools and the community.
Adding some fun and friendly rivalry to our school grounds, the In-House Dodgeball Competition was held in Week 7. Students were invited to nominate teams of 5, where they played off for a spot in the grand final at lunch time. This event promoted engagement, healthy competition, and a strong sense of spirit among participants and spectators alike. Congratulations to our winning team of 5 who took home the prize of a $30 gift card each to spend! Well done!
Looking ahead to Term 3, we are excited for our biggest event of the year — the Whole School Athletics Carnival, set to take place on Friday 29th August. This is a day for students to shine in track and field events, house spirit to thrive, and for our school community to come together in support of participation and achievement. All students are encouraged to get involved, and to contribute to the fantastic energy and excitement that the carnival always brings.
A huge thank you to all HPE staff and TSHS staff who have assisted the HPE Department this term to ensure our students are given all of these wonderful opportunities to represent their school with pride.

Soccer Carnival
On Tuesday the 1st of July, the Year 9/10 girls' soccer team travelled to Coker Park to compete in the Lightning Soccer Carnival. The girls played with incredible determination and heart, pushing through a tense penalty shootout to qualify for the finals. Although they narrowly missed out on a grand final spot by just one goal, they bounced back strongly to claim third place with a solid 2–0 victory over Roleystone. Mahek was named MVP of the day, an honour awarded by students from Lynwood SHS, while Linda delivered an outstanding performance as goalkeeper. The team should be extremely proud of their efforts, not just for their results on the field, but for the sportsmanship and team spirit they displayed throughout the day.

Year 11 Outdoor Education – Manning Park Adventure
Our Year 11 Outdoor Education students recently spent an action-packed day at Manning Park, participating in a range of outdoor challenges and activities designed to build navigation, teamwork, and bushcraft skills.
The day began with students tackling a challenging orienteering course, putting their map reading and compass skills to the test as they worked through a series of checkpoints and questioning activities across the park. Their problem-solving and collaboration were on full display, with everyone completing the course successfully.
After conquering the orienteering component, students hiked to the top of the Manning Stairs, pushing themselves physically before being rewarded with sweeping views over C.Y. O’Connor Beach. The trail continued along the ridge, offering a great opportunity to appreciate the natural environment and reflect on the value of Outdoor Education.
Lunchtime saw students pair up to cook on portable gas stoves, preparing some unreal meals that showcased both their creativity and camp cooking skills. From steak sandwiches to nachos and everything in between, there was no shortage of impressive efforts – or delicious smells!
It was a fantastic day filled with learning, laughs, and fresh air, and we’re proud of how the students conducted themselves. A big thank you to Mr Binder who came along for the day and helped make it such a success.
We’re looking forward to more adventures ahead as the Year 11s continue their Outdoor Education journey.
